My parents were both from Gozo although they moved to Malta before the Second World War. My mother, Carmena (nee Vella-Haber) was born in Nadur and my father, Anglu, was born in Qala. I have two brothers and one sister. I attended the Lyceum in Hamrun. After I graduated, I spent some time at the University of Malta and then I worked at the St. Paul's Press in the Marsa Industrial Estate until I moved to Canada in 1967. I arrived in Winnipeg, Manitoba during Canada's Centennial year in May of 1967. I was part of a group of about sixty Maltese people who came to Canada under an agreement between the government of Malta and the government of Manitoba. My first job in Canada was at the Winnipeg General Hospital. I decided right away that I wanted to enter the computer field so I enrolled at a computer programming school. When I finished my training I started my first programming job with a local insurance company, Wawanesa Mutual. I worked for Wawanesa for almost two years. During that time I married a Maltese girl I met in Winnipeg. My wife Rita was born in Valletta but came to Canada with her parents in the early sixties. In 1970 I was offered a job with the City of Brandon, a city of 45,000 people located about 120 miles West of Winnipeg. I worked for the City of Brandon as a programmer for about two years. During my stay in Brandon. We moved back to Winnipeg after I was offered a job as a programmer/analyst with the Canadian Premier Life Insurance Company. I worked for Canadian Premier Life (later changing its name to Citadel Life) for thirteen years. Our two children, Michelle and Ian were both born in Winnipeg at the St. Boniface General Hospital. In 1982 I was asked to transfer to a newly formed position at the Citadel's Toronto Head Office. I accepted the offer and I changed careers from a Senior Systems Analyst to an Information Security Officer. I was asked to establish an Information Security program for the company. I left the company in 1986 to join the Canadian Depository for Securities Ltd. as Manager of Information Security. I stayed with the Depository until 1991. During that time, I established the Information Security department for the organization. I was also responsible for the physical and employee security programs for the Depository.
In 2003 I joined (ISC)², Inc as Senior Mnager of IT Infrastructure and Webmaster. I have been very active in the Information Security profession. I served on the Executive of the Disaster Recovery Information Exchange (Canada) as secretary and webmaster for seven years. I was also on the executive of the Eastern Canada CA-ACF2 Users Group and served as the organization's President for two years. In 1995 I was elected to the Executive Committee of the CA-World Enterprise-Wide Security and Audit Conference in New Orleans, La. In August of 1992 I received my designation as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). In 1994, I was appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. I served as a member of the Board of Directors and an Officer of (ISC)², Inc. until 2004. I have been a frequent speaker on information security and disaster recovery planning at conferences and symposia across North America. I also lectured at the Faculty of Information Studies and School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto. Outside work, I run my own Web Design and Administration Services company, Intiss.
