GHAJN TUFFIEHA BAY

By: Wilfred L. Camilleri

"Ghajn Tuffieha" literally translates into the "Eye of the Apple". I don't know where the name comes from, but it is intriguing. Ghajn Tuffieha Bay is located just east of Golden Bay, one of three bays carved out of the cliffs. It is situated a the bottom of Wied tal-Pwales (Pwales stream.) This beach is also a sandy beach and it's quite big. Reaching it however, is not easy. There are no paved roads that can take you down to the beach from atop the cliffs and usually people walk down to it. As a result, the beach does not get crowded.

The view from the top of the cliffs on the western side is spectacular. (I use this word quite often to describe the views around the beaches in Malta. This is because most of the bays and beaches in Malta are carved out of high cliffs.) The view from the top of the high ridges is breathtaking. The sea is deep blue and aquamarine water interspersed with emerald and white stretches of sand. It's always a good idea to carry your camera around even when going to the beach.

There's a lookout tower at the top of the cliffs at the western edge of the bay. This is one of the many towers that were build during the times of the Knights of Malta. The towers were used to keep an eye out for invaders. The area around the tower is quite rocky and one can find a lot of caper bushes growing in the area. From this vantage point, you can see both bays - Golden Bay to the west and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay to the east.
