MALTESE TOWNS, VILLAGES, SITES AND BEACHES

GNEJNA BAY

By: Wilfred L. Camilleri

Gnejna Bay is the third of the three bays located one next to the other on the south-western side of Malta. As with the other two bays, this one is located at the bottom of a valley. This valley is quite lush and many fruit trees grow in the rich moist soil. The drive down the steep road that leads to the botoom of the valley is pleasant. The road is twisty and narrow and is flanked on both sides with farmers field-rock walls ("Hajt tas-Sejjieh") Farmers in Malta build these walls to protect the valuable thin layer of rich soil used to grow vegetables for local markets.

Gnejna Bay is rarely crowded and one can spend a pleasant day at this beach. There are a number of one-room buildings on the east side of the bay used by local fishermen. One can usually see a few colourful Maltese boats pulled onto the beach.
