Subject: Would like to make contact with De La Salle College, Cottonerabo arder students 1970 to 82

Date: Sunday, April 08, 2001

From: Ahmed Maher
E-Mail: ahmed.maher@amd.com

Hi

My name is Ahmed Maher. I attended De La Salle College, Cottonera, Malta from 1970 to 1982, I was famous there, because I was the biggest trouble maker of all DLS's history. I am trying to contact any boarder students that attended the college during that time, in particular my class mates of 1980-82. I currently live in San Jose, California, my web site is www.jps.net/amaher.

"Hey "Sausage", if you read this send me a note know or I'll come over and take your casing off. Yes, you Francisco, you're probably still in Malta."

From: Constantino Axisa
E-Mail: hoops@nextgen.net.mt

Dear Wilfred

I am Constantino, and of course I am from Malta.

I am emailing you with respect to a research which I am doing in conjunction with the Malta Basketball Association.

We are looking for male basketball players world-wide who have Maltese connections, hopefully to be able to enroll them in our Seniors National Team and play in the forthcoming national team games.

To this respect, we would be very grateful if you could email me any info you might have and maybe if possible include this in a Maltese community radio slot.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further assistance.

Thanks and regards

Subject: Research Project on the use of the English Language in Malta

Date: Sunday, June 03, 2000

From: Derrek Gauchi
E-Mail: dcauchi@attcanada.net

Dear Mr. Camilleri,

I am a 37 year old school teacher, born and raised in Montreal. My Grandfather (Charles Cauchi) came to Canada as a young man (somewhere around 1930) where he was trained as a cabinet maker, worked as a merchant marine and died in an auto accident when my own father was still a boy.

I know very little about my Maltese grandfather or about the place from which he came, as his only son (my father Roger Cauchi) and my grandmother (Corinne LeBlanc -deceased) have rarely spoken of him, never mind shared any stories or significant information. Apparently, because my grandfather followed an uncle to Canada, I may have some family in Toronto. Maybe I'm related to Father Alphonse Cauchi!

Anyway, this is not some kind of desperate situation. I have often thought it would be nice to feel closer to the people that gave me this wonderfully odd name to live up to and pass on ( I have two sons of my own).

If there is any way you could put out the word (about my little search for belonging) to the Cauchi's in the Toronto community or if you would just like to send me any info. concerning Maltese gatherings etc., I would be much obliged.

Sincerely,
Derrek R.J. Cauchi

Greetings!

My name is Miguel A. Soto and I'm a 35 year-old geographer from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The purpose of this letter is to obtain information from you about my personal interest on the art of map-making. At this moment, I would like to know how to find a full-scale, hard-copy general map of your country with the place names and lankmarks written, not in English, but in your own alphabet, in your national oficial language (Maltese).

The intent of my search is to have a map of your country as your nation sees itself. Already I possess some from various places I've visited. For this I will be very grateful for any information you may provide me. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Miguel A. Soto

From: Melissa-Anne Vella
E-Mail: vella@globalserve.net

My name is Melissa-Anne Vella and I am the daughter of two Maltese-born parents who currently reside in Toronto. I am twenty-one years old and currently in my third year at the University of Toronto. I am a pre-med student, presently studying Human Biology in order to earn a Bachelor of Science degree. I have taken many science-related courses such as Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physics and Organic Chemistry and this year I am taking Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Eukaryotic and Molecular Organisms as well as Animal Biodiversity.

I am sending this e-mail to enquire as to whether you know of any opportunities whereby students can either work or assist in research during the summer months in Malta. I am extremely interested in going to Malta this summer (as all of my relatives reside there) from May to the end of August, however I do need to gain experience for my professional career. I feel that international experience, especially in Malta, would be of great benefit to me and without a doubt, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

If you know of anything in relation to what I have mentioned, it would be greatly appreciated if you e-mailed me any information that you may have. Thank you immensely in advance for your time.

Sincerely,
Melissa-Anne Vella

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! My name is Jeannette Brossart and I live in the US. I am trying to research my Maltese family history and I'm stuck. A cousin has told me that my Greatgrandfather, Valerio Caruana (and his wife Carmela Cassar) lived in Senglea around 1900. I know he was appointed to the courts (in some capacity) in 1907.

This page is the first reference I've seen to Senglea and I wanted more info and other links, if possible. Does the author of this article live there? Does he know detailed information that I could have access to from the US? Any suggestions you may have would be great.

Thanks, Jeannette

Subject: RESEARCH IN MALTA

Date: Sunday, September 27, 1998
From: Susan Slavik
E-Mail: sslavik@mail.islandnet.com

My name is Hannah Slavik and I am a Canadian student studying at the University of Malta. I am working on a Master's thesis in Linguistics. I enjoyed spending last year living and studying in Malta, but now I am in Canada, to do fieldwork for my thesis. I am investigating the status of the Maltese language among Maltese immigrants to Canada. I am interested in learning whether Maltese immigrants to Canada continue to speak Maltese within the family when they come to Canada, or whether they quickly switch to English. I am also interested in whether the children of Maltese immigrants tend to grow up speaking or understanding Maltese, or not. I would like to know how important it is for Maltese Canadians to preserve their language, and for them to pass on their language to their children.

Also, I would like to find out whether the children of Maltese immigrants have a desire to learn the Maltese language, and why or why not.

I would be most grateful for responses from any Maltese immigrants in Canada, or the children of Maltese Canadians. If anyone has comments on this topic, or would be willing to participate in a short survey or interview, by e-mail, phone, regular mail, or in person, depending on location and preference, please contact me.

Please respond to:

hslavik@hotmail.com OR sslavik@islandnet.com

Also, please feel free to contact my research supervisor, Dr. Lydia Sciriha, lscir@cis.um.edu.mt at the University of Malta, if you have any questions regarding my research.

Many people have told me that as Malta is so small I will not find enough to occupy me for two weeks. I would be grateful for opinions on this and also for information about places to go, good places to eat and drink, and things to see. I will probably stay in Marsaskala so local information would be particularly welcome.

From: Dr. Edward A. Maruggi
E-Mail: EAMNOD@ritvax.isc.rit.edu

Dear Mr. Camilleri;

I have been trying to find my earliest roots and have evidence that my Maruggi surname is rooted in Malta in the 15th century. Gianpietro Maruggi was, supposedly, Patriarch and Governor of the Island. His descendants succeeded him in the highest offices and were successful in the liberation of this Island and also prevented an incursion by the Arabs. In 1470 Leonardo Maruggi moved to Sicily from Malta. Later moves were to Calabria and Potenza in Italy where my father was born (Melfi). Can you provide me with information on where I might continue my research of my Maruugi roots????

Ciao

Subject: Trying to locate Relatives

From: Melvin A. Hibbard
E-Mail: melhibbard@parismail.com

Hello Wilfred,

Many thanks for all the hard work that went into your superb web-site. I am very impressed. I am researching my family, and am also seeking relatives in Malta. My mother (Violet Hibbard, nee Pitre') was born in Hamrun. She is the middle of five Pitre' sisters.

I have a cousin, Mary Inglott whom was living in Sliema up to a short time ago. She has a daughter by the name of Bernadette, whom I assume to be married and has taken her husband's family name. I would like to make contact with either of them to post them of the events here in the United States concerning our family. Would anyone be able to assist me in locating Mary or her daughter. It has been mentioned that Mary might be residing in a senior citizen centre of some sort.

Thank you Wilfred for a marvelous visit to an enchanting island. I wish to visit Malta very soon, and absorb all the wonderment of her marvelous history and people. Finding my family history will be a most exciting challenge.

Subject: Research Project About the Maltese in Canada

Date: Saturday, 15 March 1997
From: John Portelli
E-Mail: John.Portelli@MSVU.Ca

My name is John Portelli, a Maltese who came to Canada in 1977. I have lived in Montreal and currently live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I teach in the faculty of education at Mount Saint Vincent university. Presently I am pursuing a research project about the Maltese in Canada. I am writing to several Maltese in Canada whose e-mail address is available in Wilfred Camilleri's and Grazio Falzon's Malta web pages in order to seek information or assistance in this project.

The primary purpose of this study is to carry out an interdisciplinary study (historical-sociological-cultural studies) about the Maltese in Canada. This study was triggered after I spent one month in Toronto this past summer. This stay gave me the opportunity to visit the Maltese organisations in Toronto, and to learn more about the Maltese community. Through informal conversations, I heard several narratives of Maltese immigrants about their lives in Canada: why they emigrated; how they travelled to Canada; what they expected from Canada; what they found and felt about Canada; the role of the Maltese community in their process of adapting; their working conditions, etc. I learned a lot from these conversations. A thorough search in Canadian libraries indicates that very little has been written about the Maltese in Canada. My aim is to document information I gather from Maltese in Canada. I believe this study will contribute both to the understanding of the intricacies and complexities that take place within the development of a small ethnic-cultural group in Canada, as well as to the understanding of certain aspects of social life in Canada as seen from the perspective of such a group.

I have already conducted archival searches of holdings in Ottawa. I plan to do similar searches in Toronto and elsewhere. And finally I hope to conduct semi-structured interviews with informants-participants. I plan to conduct such interviews in Toronto this Spring. I would also like to interview or carry out a survey either through e-mail or regular mail. Participants are assured that the interviews-surveys will be kept confidential: any direct quotes will be anonymous unless the participants may prefer not to conceal their anonymity. The interview or survey can be conducted in Maltese or English.

If you are interested in assisting in this study, I would greatly appreciate it if you write to me. I would also be very grateful if you bring to my attention names and addresses of other Maltese who may be interested in this study, as well as other sources (books, articles, news paper articles, etc.) or documents (pictures, letters, etc.)

With Best Wishes/Sahhiet

Been visiting your excellent WWW pages about Malta, and finding lots of information. You see, the thing is that we play this game set in medieval Malta, and I'm looking for background material.

Sorry to bother you with this, but much of the information I find seems to focus on the time of the Hospitallers, and while interesting enough, I'm looking for information about Malta in the 12th and 13th century.

You wouldn't happen to know any resources that would be appropriate? Any pointers to relevant sites on Malta (castles, old Roman cities, things like that) I could search for information on?

Also, I wonder, was there anything at Valletta before it became the capital?

I hope you'll take the time to answer, I'd be very grateful for any and all information you can provide. :-)

From: Patrick Steel
E-Mail: patrick@c031.aone.net.au

Hi:

First, I would like to congratulate you on your excellent Malta pages. Through my business dealings with the Casan group of companies I came to realise the tremendous interest there was in Malta for on-line information services. It is nice to see that our beliefs were well founded.

Through business dealings, which included a short (1995)visit to your beautiful Island, I came to know 2 gentlemen by the name of David Walbank and Joseph Micallef. Both worked for Casan Technical Services. We developed a warm relationship on both a working and personal level (aided in part through the visiting of some fine restaurants in Singapore and Malta).

On leaving my previous company (Singapore Computer Systems), I moved to Melbourne Australia and subsequently lost contact with people, hence this message.

If anyone knows either of these to gentlemen, or they happen to read this message, please get in contact as I would very much like to continue with the friendship we had started.

Final message to David Walbank

Thanks

E-Mail: sacsc@conicit.ve OR pyd@vcn.bc.ca

Hello everyone,

My name is Paul Young. I'm from Caracas, Venezuela (South America). I'm a computer programmer but I have always had a strong interest in History. Perhaps due to my mixed ancestry (English, Spanish, Italian, Russian and who knows what else!) I have always felt interests towards other countries and cultures. Since long ago I've been interested in Malta and lately I have been trying to track down an obscure World War II Spitfire pilot who very possibly was based in Malta during April - June 1942. I have quite scarce data about this fellow (no last name, no nationality, no rank) and all I can do is follow several hints. I've researched a bit on RAF and Spitfires, but a lot of holes and doubts remain. I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me on (or part of) any the questions bellow:

  1. Which were the RAF/RAAF/RCAF/RNZAF Spitfire squadrons based in Malta between April-June 1942 (Besides RAF's 601,603 and 249)?
  2. When did RAF's 603 squadron left Malta?
  3. Were RAAF's 451,452 and 457 squadrons ever based in Malta?

Any related information or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Sincerely,
Paul Oliver Young

My grandfather Tomaso Vella had written what I believe to be the only Mathematics book in Maltese. It had some sections in English. This was in the early thirties. The only copy that I know of this book is at the Bibliotheca in Valletta. There must be copies of the book in some attics, basements or what have you. If anyone out there has a copy and would like to part with it, I would very much appreciate getting it. This is mainly as a sentimental value. I have checked with several members, near and distant, of our family, and nobody seems to have a copy. My grandfather died several years ago in Sydney, Australia. At the time he was living with my uncle and aunt, the Gonzi's.

Thanks in anticipation of somebody finding me a copy. Tom

Subject: Equipment used by the Knights of Malta during the Great Siege.

Hi my name is John Hills. I was born in Canterbury, UK, and now work there, in the Geography Department of Canterbury Christ Church College. I have both professional and personal interests in Malta. Professionally, the Department goes on annual field trips to Malta, examining agriculture, urban growth, countryside management, etc.

Personally I am fascinated by the Great Siege, and wish to create a war game simulation of it using model soldiers and scenery. My big problem is the equipment of the Maltese militia troops. The museums in Malta suggest good equipment, but various readings suggest that only a small proportion had adequate arms and armour. Can anyone clarify the situation? J.R.Hills@cant.ac.uk
