MALTESE CITIES, VILLAGES AND SITES
QALA - GOZO
By: Wilfred L. Camilleri
The village of Qala is located in a rural setting with farmland surrounding the village. Apart from the church, the eighteenth-century windmill is a well known landmark. Dahlet Qorrot, a small cove directly north of Qala, you can see traditional fishing boats rocking in the clear blue waters. You can still see fisherman mending nets and taking care of their colourful boats there. The water in the cove is quite deep and there are some good diving points along the cove. The road leading to the cove is quite narrow and a bit of an adventure, but it's worth the drive. When you look to the south from Qala, you can see the Blue Lagoon and the island of Comino. The view is great and you can get some great shots of the Blue Lagoon from the main road as you drive to the eastern end of Qala. The small and secluded beach of Hondoq ir-Rummien is located on the eastern most part of the village of Qala and is quite popular with locals. The quarries located in Qala provided a lot of building blocks for Maltese structures. The huge rocks used to build the Mgarr Harbour breakwater came from these quarries. Some of the best granite slabs were cut from these quarries. The parish Saint of Qala is St. Joseph. There is another church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in the village. It is know that the village was inhabited in prehistoric times from Cart Ruts and tombs found in the area. The village is still rural in nature and a lot of the rich land in and around the village is still farmed and produces some excellent fruit and vegetables.
